Hi, hello!
I hope you have all been fantastic! If you can’t tell, I’ve been on an oldies kick lately (hence the Olivia Newton-John song reference in the title). Sigh. Music in the 70s was just so much better!
Today I’m here to discuss and share with you my overall thoughts on the brand Mellow Cosmetics. Mellow Cosmetics is based in New Zealand, however they do have free shipping for anything over $40 USD to New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the US–otherwise it costs $8 to ship which isn’t horrible in my opinion!
I’ve tried a variety of Mellow’s products — from their shadows, lipsticks to liquid lipsticks. I have very wishy-washy thoughts on the brand as a whole, as some items are holy grails, while others I think need some improvement for sure.
Shall I start with the yay or nay first? I personally like always getting the bad over with, so here it goes! Their eyeshadow palette Treasure Chest, costs $24 USD which isn’t too pricey for a palette with 12 shadows. They consist of 4 matte and 8 shimmer shades.
I was really excited to try this palette as the Mellow Cosmetics liquid lipsticks are simply amazing *spoiler*! Unfortunately, the matte shadows lacked in pigmentation and the shimmer shades almost had so much shimmer that I looked like a five year old trying to apply makeup for the first time. There was a lot of fallout as well, which I did not expect so if you do try this palette, ensure you put on your foundation afterwards!
Row 1 – from top to bottom:
- Crystal
- Topaz
- Amber
- Rose Gold
- Tiger Eye
- Pearl
If I had to choose a favourite from this row, it would be Rose Gold! It was pretty pigmented and applied nicely. The other shades did not impress me that much!
Row 2 – from top to bottom:
- Amethyst
- Smoked Topaz
- Rhodonite
- Garnet
- Smokey Quartz
- Onyx
The best shade in this row would have to be Garnet. Having doubts with this palette, I was excited to see such a pigmented shade! Unfortunately, the matte shades just didn’t work very well. Smokey Quartz and Onyx looked like it would possibly work but when blending them, they had very little pigmentation and it was hard to build up the colour.
Pictured above is a look I made with this palette – unfortunately, it just doesn’t look very defined. I have a lazy eye if you can’t tell, so its always interesting taking snapshots of me and they always look a bit odd haha. My apologies – I am the way I am!
Left to right – Nude, Posh
Mellow’s Creamy Matte Lipsticks are actually quite creamy – they feel nice on the lips and are super pigmented! They look matte but feel comfortable for a few hours wear. Mind you, they aren’t claiming to be long lasting. One thing I found off though is that the shade Nude is actually…pink? Like straight up mauve-pink? Lol. Weird.
Me awkwardly wearing Nude (left) and Posh (right). I also do not know how to use my new Canon camera properly because I’m too lazy to read instructions and I also don’t have a tripod yet. I tried, sigh.
OK, so the brand Mellow so far has been…well, mellow (heh..)…but fear not! Their Liquid Lip Paints are FANTASTIC! Seriously – one of the best I’ve ever tried (and I’ve tried a lot). They dry matte but are comfortable on the lips! Honestly, I recommend these 120%! I find they don’t swatch great on the arm but on the lips they look heavenly.
Below I have included both swatches on my arm and on my lips as well. Prepare to be blasted with pictures of me….I’m sorry.
From top to bottom: Shanghai, Budapest, Tehran, London, Puerto Rico
- Shanghai
Shanghai is a brown/red shade that is deep enough to wear on a night out or even wear to work/school! I would feel comfortable wearing this shade if I want to fancy it up a little bit personally. Its that perfect colour if you want to try and wear the brown lip trend but you want to still be safe!
Budapest
Budapest is a lovely mauve/purple shade that again, isn’t too out there but is juuust enough! This is probably my second most worn shade by the brand as it goes with most of my outfits since I’ve been loving these mauve shades lately! I totally recommend this colour for those who want to make a statement, or for those just wanting to try a popular shade in a super comfortable formula.
Tehran
Can you tell that I love this shade by my smile? Haha. I wear this shade almost daily – it is my go to liquid lipstick in general. Its the perfect nude lip that makes you look effortlessly gorgeous! If you were only to get one item from Mellow Cosmetics, this would be the one I would say you MUST get! 🙂
London
This shade is a lovely vibrant fuchsia- a shade I think everyone should own! I think this shade in itself is very ‘dupe-able’ but the formula is really fantastic and therefore, worth it! This isn’t a shade I typically wear regularly, but it definitely is a statement shade that will go with a lot of looks going out.
Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is a shade I put on and I’m like ‘lol no’ but then afterwards I’m like…’oh….who dat gurl’ haha kidding. This shade isn’t one I would wear all the time either but I like how it is just a bit different than any lip colour I own yet…familiar? Not sure if that makes sense. I think if you are looking for something different yet wearable, this is up your alley!
Mellow Cosmetics recently came out with three new liquid lipstick shades which totally convinced me to make another Mellow Cosmetics haul!
From top to bottom: Milan, Ibiza, Auckland
Milan
OK, I have to be honest I don’t love this shade on me personally but I really wish I did! When I swatched it, I was super excited but on my own lips it looks too…pink? I’m not sure. I’m hesitant on this one, guys! It isn’t bad whatsoever, I just don’t know if it looks good on me haha.
Ibiza
This shade is JUST light enough for me to try and pull off without it completely washing me out. It definitely is a nice, cool toned nude shade. This would look great with a smokey eye in my opinion.
Auckland
This shade is really, really pretty. It is a nice burgundy shade that is super wearable, pigmented and comfortable. I think this shade would look lovely on everyone! 🙂
I know this overview can be seen as a bit wishy-washy, but I really just want to convey that’s how I truly feel about what I’ve tried. I don’t want to sugar coat it or lie — I want to be honest with what I like and don’t. Unfortunately, the eyeshadows did not work for me but the liquid lipsticks on the other hand wear like a dream!
What are your thoughts on Mellow Cosmetics? Have you tried them?
If not, will you? (Def try the liquid lipsticks heh).
