WHO’S THAT GIRL?
I don’t blame you for not knowing since it has ~literally~ been years since I have blogged. I am embarrassed. I am sad. But I am mainly extremely disappointed in myself. I apologize to those who may have gone to my page to only realize I was not active. I’m so, so sorry. There is no excuse really except that it completely escaped me. I feel like the past two years have been such a whirlwind, with so many things happening!
I am hoping to post more and I hope this doesn’t become a diary I never write in again. To update y’all – I am now working as a Supervisor in residence life and I am ENGAGED! Woot :)! I’ve been planning our wedding for a bit now, so if you are interested in my planning process, please make sure you let me know below and I shall share!
NOW, since I haven’t been here for two years (cringe), I thought, what better way to reintroduce myself than to share my yearly favourites? ❤
Best Primer – Too Faced Hangover Replenishing Face Primer ($45 CAD):
This year I’ve been on the hunt for a hydrating primer that also keeps my makeup on all day. I find this primer is super moisturizing for my dry skin and even soothes my skin when its having a moment (which has been often, let me tell you). This is the perfect everyday primer – I don’t find it really minimizes pores or anything so sometimes I use a smoothing primer on my nose area on top of this and it works like a dream! I’ve repurchased two bottles throughout the year, which tells you that I really do enjoy it!
Best Skin Mist – Farsali Rose Gold 24k Skin Mist ($52 CAD):
I’ve been thoroughly enjoying this skin mist over the past year – it provides a nice dewy finish to my skin but it isn’t TOO dewy. Its also great to reset my makeup if I’ve had a long day and am planning on going out again. I probably have 10-15 skin mists and this is the only one I have ever repurchased! The mist is super fine as well, which I love.
Best Foundation – Urban Decay Stay Naked Weightless Foundation ($53 CAD):
This foundation completely surprised me. This year (and well, for many years) I’ve been a foundation junkie…I seriously have too many. I didn’t really know what to expect and I had the foundation in my collection for a good month before I tried it because I didn’t give it much thought or anticipation. The first day I wore it, I was amazed! One way I know a foundation is good for me is how it lasts on my nose. For some reason, I cannot get foundations to stay on my nose throughout the day. This stayed on my nose and my makeup still looked great at the end of the day! I will say, if I am having a VERY dry day, I skip on this because it *can* cling to some dry patches if they are bad. But honestly, this is a beautiful foundation and I highly recommend it!
Best Foundation Runner-Up – Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Hydrating Longwear Foundation ($45 CAD):
This foundation has quickly become a fave of mine. I was hooked on the soft matte foundation for a little bit but when this came out, I fell in love. This foundation is long lasting yet is great for my dry skin. I’d say its about medium coverage but is definitely buildable to full coverage. I love how its in a tube as well! 🙂 I’m obsessed with the shade range because it’s freaking 2020, right?
Best Concealer – Smashbox Studio Skin Flawless 24-Hour Concealer ($32 CAD):
This concealer is so.FREAKING.GOOD! Its full coverage but feels light weight. It completely gets rid of all my dark circles. I tried this on a whim because I heard it was a dupe for a Tom Ford concealer. I never ended up trying the Tom Ford concealer because I loved this one so much! The doe-foot applicator is great and distributes the perfect amount of product.
Best Concealer Runner-Up – Jeffree Star Magic Star Concealer ($30 CAD):
Let’s be honest here…can Jeffree Star do no wrong? I mean, yes, I guess he can, but in the makeup world his products are always on point. This concealer is everything I have ever wanted – full coverage, absolutely stunning natural finish. The packaging is superb, but even if this was in a regular plastic tube I would still love it. It doesn’t set super quick so I have a bit of time to play around with the concealer and then bake.
Best Under Eye Setting Powder – Jeffree Star Magic Star Setting Powder ($30 CAD):
YOU NEED THIS. This is my holy grail under eye setting powder. I always bake my under eyes with this powder and it gives such a natural and beautiful finish! I use the shade fair which is super brightening which I love. I also enjoy the translucent powder for setting my entire face but this is absolutely golden for under the eyes. 10/10, recommend.
Best Setting Powder – Charlotte Tilbury Genius Magic Powder ($58 CAD):
This is the most beautiful setting powder. There’s many setting powders I’ve used that look GOOD but this one is GREAT. I find it completely blurs my skin and gives a very luminous yet natural look. I truly think almost $60 is a bit steep for a setting powder, but this is something that I just keep going back to!
Best Luminous Powder – Lancome Absolue Powder Radiant Smoothing Powder in Absolute Pearl ($85.73 CAD):
….Yes. Yes, this powder is $85. And yes, I have purchased this twice. I am ashamed. But at the same time, it is PERFECTION IN A JAR. Folks, when I heard Jaclyn Hill raving about this years ago I was like hmmm…I usually like her recommendations..and I do enjoy looking like a radiant goddess…so I decided to try it. I was wishing I actually wouldn’t like it because its super hard to find in Canada and I typically need to order it from the US which is crazy stupid expensive in itself. But I loved it. I still do. This powder is not for the weak and definitely not to set your entire face with. I like to dust it on my forehead a bit, under my eyes a tad and the apples of my cheeks and it gives such a luminous glow!
Best Luminous Powder Runner-Up – Jaclyn Hill Mood Light Luminous Powder in Dew Me & Brighten Up ($32 USD):
This runner-up is a bit of a cheat because it only released in December I think. But I’ve been using it everyday since I bought it and these shades work beautifully – I would say in comparison to the Lancome powder! This is definitely a more affordable alternative and something I think Jaclyn was trying to mimic a bit. She did a fantastic job, and there definitely aren’t enough of these powders in the beauty world. I highly suggest trying these as they are still available on Jaclyn Hill’s website.
Best Eyelash Primer – Marc Jacobs Velvet Primer – Epic Lash Primer ($35 CAD):
I literally cannot put mascara on without putting this on first! This primer makes my lashes longer and thicker – it is truly amazing! I like how the primer is a neutral shade so I can see it coating each lash before I put on my mascara. This has definitely been my go-to, despite what mascara I use.
So this mascara was in its package unopened in the back of my beauty collection for a lo0o0o0ong time…until I ran out of mascara and decided to give it a quick go. Well, to my surprise I freaking LOVE this mascara as a secondary mascara. Now, I know you are thinking, “why not find a mascara that can just do it all?” WELL, I can, and I have…but this one on top of another mascara just goes the extra mile in lengthening my lashes. I love the waterproof version because I am a hot mess and need my tears to be contained. I am so upset because I cannot find the waterproof version ANYWHERE anymore…so if you find it, please let me know!
Best Mascara Runner-Up – L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise Waterproof ($10.96 CAD):
This mascara is really nice – it thickens, lengthens, its waterproof so it contains my outbursts. It definitely makes my lashes look voluminous yet fluttery! My favourite combination is using this and then using the Maybelline Define-A-Lash!
This has been my go-to brow pencil for the last year and I am truly obsessed. I’ve always thought I’d be an Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz chick forever – but after hearing raving reviews on this pencil I decided to give it a whirl. I am sooo glad I did because I was addicted from the first time I used it and I’ve never gone back to Anastasia. I always have another one of these in my makeup drawer in case I ever run out so I don’t end up with only one eyebrow!
Best Brow Gel – Benefit Cosmetics Gimme Brow+ Volumizing Eyebrow Gel ($32 CAD):
I discovered this brow gel shortly after I tried their pencil. I went to a Benefit Cosmetics event in Toronto and they used this brow gel on me and I was hooked. I love how small the brush is and how the colour deposits – not too much, not too little! I also love the shade range and have always enjoyed having my brow gel be a colour, and not clear. This definitely sets my brows but doesn’t give it a chunky look or feel to them which I appreciate!
Hourglass is hands down one of the most beautiful brands ever – from its packaging to perfect marbleized powders. I have easily become obsessed with this bronzer – it gives such a natural finish to my cheekbones and gives them a bit of depth. I love how its a bit more on the cool side and I can really build it up if I want to. Overall, these bronzers are absolutely gorgeous. I would say when purchasing it, I bring a few to the front and open them with the cashier because I am a bit picky in regards to how the marbleization is!
Best Bronzer Runner-Up – Physician’s Formula Butter Bronzer in Sculpting Bronzer ($21.99 CAD):
I love this bronzer if I want to go in a bit deeper with my overall look or even contour a bit. My favourite way to use this is to use the Hourglass bronzer first and lightly dust this over that! I find it gives the perfect shade for my skin tone! Plus, this bronzer smells divine!
Best Bronzer Runner-Up: Fenty Sun Stalk’r Instant Warmth Bronzer in Inda Sun ($40 CAD):
This is the perfect everyday bronzer when I’m on the go! Honestly I would say the two bronzers above are holy grail but I have used this one quite often in my rotation this year, so I thought it deserved a mention. This shade isn’t too warm, but definitely provides a sun kissed glow that I adore. It looks like I was out in the sun and is super natural!
Best Highlight – Ofra Rodeo Drive ($35 USD):
So you can tell by this picture how much I have used this highlight…to the point of destruction, really. It looks absolutely disgusting but I use it because its not gone and I LOOOOVE IT. Its the most perfect golden/champagne shade that isn’t too yellow. I got this in an old Boxycharm (as you can tell because the packaging is old) so I am due to repurchase this for sure. If you have a light skin tone like myself, you will fall in love with this highlight.
Best Highlight Palette- Pixi x RachhLoves The Layers Highlighting Palette ($31 CAD):
I am a huge fan of RachhLoves first of all – I’ve had the chance to meet her a few times at some beauty events in Toronto and she is honestly the sweetest person ever. And very tall. When I heard about her collaboration with Pixi, I was so thrilled for her because she truly deserves it. I had begun watching her from the very beginning and loved how she was based in or around Toronto and watching her evolve has just been so amazing! This palette is so beautiful – I personally like mixing the bottom shades with lace (the top left shade) and it forms the most gorgeous highlight shade! I am so obsessed and have used this a lot more than I thought I would! SOOOO good!
Best Drugstore Blush –Physicians Formula Butter Blush in Vintage Rouge ($13.49 USD):
This is one of the only drugstore blushes (or any, for that matter) that I’ve hit pan on to the point where I HAVE to re-purchase a new one in order to continue using it. I will say that after re-purchasing it, the shade Vintage Rouge is slightly different. I’m not sure if they changed the colour a tad but the new one I got is almost more of a subtle peach whereas the one I had previously and fell in love with was more of a radiant pink. I’m a bit disappointed if in fact the colour has changed but nonetheless, the formula of these blushes are spectacular and totally worth the hype they’ve received.
I bought this blush on a whim while I was strolling in Sephora as I tend to do more often than I should. This blush swatched really pretty and I bought it in the spur of the moment. Boy, I’m glad I did! This very neutral, almost bronze shade is such a gorgeous yet natural blush. This blush will truly compliment any look you are going for and has a luminous glow. I have found this year I have been all about the glow and this definitely provides it!
So, I may be cheating a bit with these different blush categories haha but can you blame me? When these duos launched, I was so ecstatic that I ordered every single one. Out of all of them, Soft Peach really stood out to me. Soft Peach is a very pigmented yet natural shade – what I love about this duo is that you can use only one side to achieve a matte look, use the other side to get more of a glow, or mix the two to get the best of both worlds. I typically mix both in together and it creates such a nice radiance to my face. Sometimes I have a difficult time with blush staying on my cheeks all day but this duo does the trick.
Wow. What I will say is when this Khloe x Malika collection launched, I didn’t anticipate I would like these quads so much. After using both, I was shocked that I gravitated more towards the Malika palette only because it was targeted towards being a palette suited towards deeper skin tones. I have a fairly light skin tone but found that the highlight shade and blush shades mixed together made the most gorgeous blush! ❤ This is hands down my most worn blush of the year and I really wish I got a backup as it is no longer available at Sephora anymore. If you are a fan of luminosity, this quad is for you.
I absolutely love how hydrating this balm is – every single shade is so gorgeous and adds a wash of colour to my lips. It isn’t TOO pigmented, but its just enough for a subtle effect. They are so comfortable almost all these shades are in my purse, which means I use them a lot!
Best Lipgloss – Anastasia Beverly Hills Lip Gloss in Toffee ($22 CAD):
I’ll be honest, I’ve never been a lipgloss girl. I always hated how sticky they were and my lips just felt goopy. Well, obviously I was never trying the correct glosses because once I tried venturing to numerous brands, I found out not ALL glosses are the same. This ABH gloss is so pigmented like a liquid lipstick yet is in the formulation of a non-sticky gloss. I have about 10 shades but my everyday go-to is Toffee!
Best Lipgloss Runner-Up – Pat McGrath Labs Lust Lip Gloss in Flesh Fantasy ($40 CAD):
This year I also tried Pat McGrath for the first time and I’ve been using Flesh Fantasy non-stop. Its the perfect gloss to put on because it goes with anything and everything – it feels super luxurious on my lips and actually feels like its moisturizing them! The price tag is steep for a lip gloss but truthfully so worth it!
Best Eyeshadow Palette – Tati Beauty Textured Neutrals Vol 1 ($48 USD):
This eyeshadow palette came out in the later half of the year but good gosh, it really came out with a bang! The shades in this palette blend out so beautifully and effortlessly and has all the shades you could really want in a neutral palette. I love how her colour story was aimed around the same shades but with different finishes. What really won me over were the prismatic glitters on the top row. I have always wanted to try and play with glitter but never loved how messy it was, using glitter glue, etc. When using my finger, these glitters are so pigmented that I don’t need glitter glue. All I do is pat the colour down on my lid and not only does the glitter stay, it is super pigmented! This really changed the game for my eye looks and I am so grateful – I truly hope Tati comes out with more palettes featuring the prismatic glitters!
This year I went on an adventure with my lashes. In the first half of the year, I got mega volume eyelash extensions and I was SO happy with them. My lash tech was so nice and my lashes looked on point 24/7. I will be honest – the upkeep and the money it cost ended up just being too much so I ended up taking a break. As soon as I got my lashes removed, I instantly panicked and felt naked! I began to use false lashes and got the hang of it. I ended up trying these lashes as I was on the hunt to find my holy grail dramatic lashes that didn’t hit my glasses frames. These lashes are SO voluminous and dramatic yet don’t hit my glasses so they were instantly a win! I currently have about 5 pairs in my lash drawer now and always restock when Sephora has a sale!
Best Lashes – EmbeLashes in Serene ($9.95 USD):
OH MY GOD. I couldn’t only pick one set of lashes as my favourite because it was too darn close. Full disclosure, EmbeLashes did reach out to me to try their lashes and when I got them, they all looked like a freaking dream. So voluminous yet had a natural look to them. I was hesitant because they looked fairly long and I was nervous it would hit my glasses…but they didn’t! I will truthfully say that all the lashes they had sent me are so freaking gorgeous that I almost cried when I had to throw them out after using them too many times. I will 100000000% be repurchasing them and I definitely want to try ALL their different styles. Serene was my absolute favourite but all of them just completely blew my expectations! I promise you that you will not regret trying this brand! They also offer a monthly subscription box that I will link here – no, I am not getting paid or even asked to mention this, but it is something I myself will be subscribing too as well! 🙂
I know this was a ton of favourites – I had a lot to catch you up on! 😉 If you have actually read this far, I am impressed and I think we should become friends if we aren’t already. Please make sure you comment below so I can follow your blog too if you are a new visitor!
I hope you all have an amazing week ahead of you – I will talk to y’all soon!
